Can you call yourself a “Hashimoto’s Coach”?🔥
You know how marketing coaches often tell you to “niche down” so people get a clear picture of who you serve?
It’s sound advice… but here’s the catch….
(This is the part that your business coach just doesn’t know.)
If you’re a coach or holistic practitioner, you don’t want to make your niche a specific medical condition.
Let me explain…
The other day, Luke – a super-smart MD – reached out to me because he was at a crossroads.
Luke has been treating Hashimoto’s patients in his medical practice and wanted to start working with people in other states, even though he’s not licensed in them.
So he hired a business coach.
His business coach suggested he start calling himself a “Hashimoto’s Coach” and work with people worldwide.
He was excited because it felt aligned with his expertise…
But, he didn’t know that it was risky to call himself a “Hashimoto’s Coach.” 🔥
Luke had NO idea that he couldn’t just call himself a “Hashimoto’s Coach” in his medical practice and work with people everywhere.
It just doesn’t work that way from a legal perspective.
My team and I had to take Luke through a TON of areas to help him figure out how to move forward expanding his medical practice AND assess whether he should create a coaching business as well.
Here’s the gist of what I talked with him about when we connected:
✅ 1. Credentials, Credentials, Credentials!
- What’s your professional training and background?
- Where are you already licensed to practice?
- Have you done training as a coach (outside of the practice of medicine)?
✅ 2. How do you want to work 1-on-1?
- Do you prefer virtual telehealth or in-person appointments as a doctor?
- Do you want to work with people everywhere as a coach?
- Do you want to offer lab testing, maybe through Evexia or Rupa Health?
- What about supplements – thinking of using Fullscript for that?
✅ 3. What lights you up?
- Are you really passionate about Hashimoto’s in particular?
- Do you want to be known as a world-renowned medical expert about Hashimoto’s?
- Or do you care more about helping people everywhere understand how to support a healthy thyroid?
✅ 4. What title is important to you?
- How important is it to you to be known as a “doctor”?
- Are you comfortable with the title of “coach”?
- How do you want to position yourself in the marketplace?
See why it’s not as simple as “just creating a niche”, slapping “coach” after your name, and calling it a day?
Luke, like many of you, wanted to be sure he was doing things the right way, without risking his medical license.
He wanted to stay safe legally while exploring new opportunities.
After working through all those questions (and more!), Luke got clarity on what he could and couldn’t do across state lines. 🦺
Does this resonate with you too?
