Got big plans in 2018? Here’s how to legally protect them
Now that we’ve eased into the New Year and you’ve identified your 2018 game plan, it’s a great time to think about how you’re going to protect the programs, courses, retreats, and ALL that you want to launch this year.
You may be launching your first course or retreat – CONGRATS!
You may be farther along and branching out to bring on affiliates, host a retreat, launch a podcast, or hire a team – KUDOS!
You already may know you need a Client Agreement for your 1-on-1 clients, or Terms of Use for your group programs or online courses.
But, if you’re doing any of these cool things this year like holding seminars or retreats, adding affiliates, hosting a podcast, and hiring a team, you may be scratching your head going “what the heck legal document do I need?”
These legal templates wrap you and your business up in a big furry blanket of warmth and ease because they’re written in plain English that’s easy to understand (no legal mumbo-jumbo here!) and they cover your buns so you can exhale and relax – and get back to watching your fave show on Netflix. Plus, they are polished and professional documents to help YOU look polished and professional too.
- Holding a day-long seminar? You’ll want an Event Waiver for your attendees to sign when they arrive or even before the event. (But, for an overnight retreat at a hotel or an exotic location on the beach, use an Overnight Retreat Agreement instead. Staying overnight requires different language…)
- Signing up affiliates? You’ll want Affiliate Terms & Conditions to spell out the affiliate commission, when they will get paid, what happens if someone signs up without using their affiliate link, and more.
- Interviewing guest experts on your podcast? Use the Guest Expert Consent Form to be sure you’re on the same page, especially about how the interview content, intellectual property, and recording can be used by both of you afterwards.
- Hiring a Virtual Assistant (VA)? Be sure to use an Agreement for Hiring a Virtual Assistant to lay out how you will work together, what tasks you need help with, and when you will pay your virtual assistant. (If you are hiring other team members, like a graphic designer or other independent contractors, you can use specific agreements for them too).
Are you doing any of these things in 2018? I’d love to hear what you have planned. Feel free to share with me here what you’ve got up your sleeve and ask any questions about what legal documents you need. I’m here to support you!
I’m starting a podcast in March to address all of the legal questions I get asked on a regular basis! Yep! Finally! What legal areas would you like to hear me talk about on the weekly Legally Enlightened Podcast? I’ve already got 7 podcasts with micro-content (20 minutes or less!) lined up to help you with “What social media disclaimer do I need?”, “the #1 reason to use a Client Agreement”, “Trademarking 101”, and more….
Just comment below and tell me what legal topic or question you want to know more about.
