✅ Sharing affiliate links? Use this affiliate disclosure (my gift to you!)

by | Apr 8, 2024 | DIY Legal Templates

If you’re a biz owner or influencer, you ALWAYS want to disclose paid promotions or affiliate relationships that you’re promoting – and make it OBVIOUS….📣

When do you need to do it?

If you’re posting an affiliate link for a product or service – like your friend Suzy’s new online course or your favorite gluten-free bars on Amazon… you need an affiliate disclosure.

If you’re receiving any kind of compensation – including payment, free gifts or discounts… you need an affiliate disclosure.

✅ Yes, EVERY time you post something on social media with an affiliate link.
✅ Yes, EVERY time you include an affiliate promo in your enewsletter.
✅ Yes, EVERY time you list an affiliate link for a product on your website.

I know you may not WANT to do it everywhere and all the time. But if you don’t, you’d be violating Federal Trade Commission rules around truth in advertising.⚖️

Legal Love™ Tip: Always disclose paid promotions or affiliate relationships in an obvious way.

Here’s what you need to know when sharing affiliate links:

Your affiliate disclosure language needs to be:

1. Next to/near the affiliate link in your text – not far away from it.⚠️

2. Conspicuous – not hard for someone to find in your social media post, enewsletter, or website, for example. 🙈

3. Visible – not in a teeny-tiny font that’s hard to read. 👀

And, note that if you’re sharing affiliate links on your website, you want a full affiliate disclosure in your website terms (for example, my DIY Website Disclaimer already has it included).💯

Use this affiliate disclosure: (it’s my gift to you!)

You can use a variation of this sample to make it your own, but you want to say something like this…

“If you purchase this program/product through my affiliate link, know that I’ll receive a commission. However, I really believe in this program/product and I use it myself and love it, otherwise I wouldn’t be offering it to you.”

Note: You don’t have to use a program/product yourself to recommend it, but if you do, it’s good to say so, because it adds extra credibility to your recommendation.
